Those are excerpts from the famous ��Communist Manifesto,�� ones Marx and Engels pointed to strongly. Since then, one hundred and fifty years have passed. Now,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the ��armed prophet�� of our times, Subcomandante Marcos, has said in an interview:
��These were the very aboriginal women with a shy smiling face with their big eyes rolling around, wearing skirts and blouses that resemble a nameless flower in the plain. These were those aboriginal women feeding a baby with their breast open,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], wiping sweat from their forehead with a piece of shabby cloth. The wrath deeply suffused in the wooden rifles stood up high and was shouting out silently into the heaven. I cannot have my babies starved to death anymore! There is a very clear, undeniable causality between the bourgeoisie-enforced ways of production and the wrath of those Mexican aboriginal women. We could find, however, that Marx in the 19th century, who had exposed the principles of movement of the bourgeoisie mode of production for the first time, and the legendary guerilla of the 21st century, Subcomandante Marcos, who revolted with arms against the North American Free Trade Agreement,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], by leading the impoverished residents of Chiapas, Mexico, have not a little difference even though their names are much alike.
The globalization that Marx had analyzed advanced nationalism, while the globalization Marcos witnessed blossoms when nationalism dies out. Marx captured the globalization of industrial capital, but what Marcos was up against was globalization instigated by the power of financial capital and multinationals. Above all, between the two persons there exists a 70 years�� intermittent history of many frustrated movements and trials of present socialism.
The curtain of the ��short�� 20th century has drawn down historically following the re-unification of Germany in 1989 and the collapse of contemporary socialism. In fact, the world history of the 1990s until the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks was just a mere interlude. What was really new was the birth of the American Empire out of the debris of the Twin Towers in New York.
What the United States had strived for throughout the 20th century was two things.
The first was anti-Soviet expansion, anti-Communism and second was U.S. hegemony in the capitalistic world order. During the second half of the 20th century, the so-called ��Golden Age of Capitalism,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],�� the United States successfully tied up West Europe and Japan under the belt of the anti-Soviet,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], anti-communist cause.
But the disappearance of a common foe, the Soviet Union, had shaken up the basic principles of world order from the bottom. The alliance of capitalist countries, with the absence of the Soviet Union, means at most a partnership of mistrust, unstable like a three-legged race. The leadership of the United States under the umbrella of the U.N. and support from developed countries of capitalism during the Gulf War in 1990 were made possible due to the common interest of oil.
Multilateralism during the Clinton administration, in which the agenda could be enforced but was difficult to make a full agreement, was the typical expression describing the American dilemma during the transitional period. Sept. 11,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], however, gave the United States the best chance to solve its deepest and secret dilemma. Moreover, neo-conservatism,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the ideology of the United States under the banner of the ��New American Century,�� supplied the starting engine with engine oil. In the new feudalistic world order since Sept. 11, at the top of which lies the United States, Europe is required to behave as a vassal; the single minded approach of the United States to have the rest of the world decide to be a friend or an enemy forcibly leaves a choice between only fundamental Christianity and the Islamic fundamentalism, and the mega-competition of neo-liberalism combines with the unlimited wars of neo-conservatism.
The American dilemma and the globalization of neo-liberalism in a broader sense is the ��reason of existence�� of leftist movement in the 21st century. Their code names under the new conditions are Marcos over Marx, civil society/networks over nation/party,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], literalistic imagination over scientific rationalism, autonomy over regulation and international diversity over nationalism. They are also very open-minded to new media and tools,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as a retired general has once said, ��In Korea, the coup d��etat is no longer a possibility because of cell phones, Internet and traffic jams.��
Their arms depots are being filled up as the information and communication technology, the symbols of capitalist society in the 21st century, revolutionizes. The chaotic co-existence of wooden rifles of Zapatista guerillas, though they are very doubtful to be fired, and the high-tech satellite phone of Marcos, the so-called ��synchronism of non-synchronism,�� makes up the natural conditions for the anti-globalization movements.
It is questionable whether the modern Marx of the 19th century and the post-modern Marcos of the 21st century can be allied or not. Even though we suppose the two are partnering with each other, there still remains a question whether the capitalistic world order could collapse right away.
The intrinsic contradiction of capitalistic system, however, will go forward its own way,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], regardless of what Marx and Marcos intend to do, and it is very clear that the very contradiction will break down capitalism as well as reform it.
This is because the capitalism of the 21st century not only means a powerful productivity unheard of but also an unparalleled destructive power. We have to heed attention to the feasibility of reconstructing our living world destroyed by this lunatic driving force of post-modern capitalism, while keep watching on the possibility of Marx and Marcos working as a centrifugal force from capitalism ��independently and together��.
